Drivers of seedling establishment success in dryland restoration efforts

چکیده
Restoration of degraded drylands is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, reverse desertification and secure livelihoods for the two billion people who live in these areas. Bold global targets have been set dryland restoration restore millions hectares land. These questioned as overly ambitious, but without a evaluation successes failures it impossible gauge feasibility. Here we examine seeding outcomes across 174 sites on six continents, encompassing 594,065 observations 671 plant species. Our findings suggest reasons optimism. Seeding had positive impact species presence: almost third all treatments, 100% seeded were growing at first monitoring. However, risky: 17% projects failed, with no establishment any species, consistent declines found matured. Across projects, higher rates larger seed sizes resulted greater probability recruitment, further influences success including site aridity, taxonomic identity life form. that investigations examining predictive factors will yield more effective informed decision-making. The native critical efforts. authors evaluate finding some nearly successfully recruit, while zero seedling success.

High precipitation and seeded species competition reduce seeded shrub establishment during dryland restoration.
Drylands comprise 40% of Earth's land mass and are critical to food security, carbon sequestration, and threatened and endangered wildlife. Exotic weed invasions, overgrazing, energy extraction, and other factors have degraded many drylands, and this has placed an increased emphasis on dryland restoration. The increased restoration focus has generated a wealth of experience, innovations and emp...
متن کاملPost-Establishment Seedling Success in the Brazilian Cerrado: A Comparison of Savanna and Forest Species1
Due to frequent fire, low nutrient availability, and prolonged drought, tropical savanna is a stressful environment for the survival and growth of woody plant seedlings. To understand why forest species do not succeed in this environment while savanna species are able to persist, the effects of fire and woody cover on seedlings of these two functional groups were investigated in the Brazilian C...

Seedling establishment and survival on the Savannah River Site in South Carolina is being monitored as part of the Pen Branch Bottomland Restoration Project. Bottomland tree species were planted fi-om 1993-1995 across a hydrologic gradient which encompasses the drier upper floodplain corridor, the lower floodplain corridor and the continuously inundated delta. Twelve species were planted in the...
متن کاملExperimental Native Tree Seedling Establishment for the Restoration of a Mexican Cloud Forest
The cloud forests of Mexico have been degraded and severely fragmented, and urgently require restoration. However, progress with restoration has been constrained by a lack of information concerning the seedling ecology of native tree species. An experiment was therefore conducted to assess the influence of different environmental factors on the seedling survival and growth of four native tree s...
